Our Music Video

Lyrics: (Yo, left, yo, left) 'Cause sometimes you just feel tired (Yo, left, right, left) Feel weak, and when you feel weak (Yo, left, yo, left) You feel like you wanna just give up (Yo, left, right, left) But you gotta search within you (Yo, left, yo, left) Try to find that inner strength and just pull that out of you (Yo, left, right, left) And get that motivation to not give up (Yo, left, yo, left) And not be a quitter (Yo, left, right, left) No matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse 'Til the roof comes off, 'til the lights go out 'Til my legs give out, can't shut my mouth 'Til the smoke clears out, I'ma rip this, 'til my bones collapse 'Til the roof comes off, 'til the lights go out ('Til the roof, until the roof) 'Til my legs give out, can't shut my mouth (The roof comes off, the roof comes off) 'Til the smoke clears out, ('Til my legs, until my legs) I'ma rip this, 'til my bones colla...

Editing Blog Continued: Audio and Color - Music Video

Once the song was imported, I had to choose which bits of the song I wanted to use in the 75 second limit. The plan was to use the introduction, and the chorus of the song. In practice, this was far too long, forcing me to cut various parts out. For instance, the first four measures of the song, and the two measures before the vocals start. I used the third repetition of the chorus in the song, which linked nicely into a concluding phrase. I then ended the music video at a point where it sounded nice, which conveniently fell right on the 1 minute 14 second mark. I adjusted the audio levels and tried to blend the transitions the best I could using the blade tool. I then modified the length of each shot to be in sync with the music. I also had to cut a little bit of the lyrics as some parts were inappropriate for an academic project. I did this by overlaying the instrumental version of the song to the audio and then cutting to and back from the inst...

Editing Blog - Music Video

First, I had to upload all the footage onto my SSD. This was relatively easy, as I had already figured out how to do so ahead of time. I just let the files transfer and after 20 minutes it was done. The next step is to find suitable editing software. I had done extensive research beforehand and decided to use DaVinci Resolve, also by Blackmagic Designs. This editing software has a free version that I found to be very powerful and intuitive to use. This software has in depth VFX, audio, and color grading tools, and is used professionally. I went through the simple setup, and designated my SSD as the workspace drive. I watched a quick YouTube tutorial on the basics of this software. I then configured some miscellaneous settings like the timeline framerate, format, colorspace, and resolution. I went with 1080p 24fps rec.709 colorspace.      I then uploaded all the footage into the media pool, organizing each clip into folders of shots ...

The tracking shot of the actor running was by far the most challenging shot. Over the span of 20 minutes I took 15+ takes of this shot. I originally planned to ride my bike and film at the same time. After multiple attempts, I was only able to get one decent shot this way, but the image was slightly tilted. I then tried running beside the actor, which was a shaky mess. Khamaree was able to get a decently framed shot doing this, but the actor was only jogging, not really running. In the end I had maybe two decent shots that could be improved upon. I also had trouble dialing in the exposure settings for the outdoor shots. I had no choice but to drastically increase the shutter speed, sacrificing motion blur. This is especially noticeable in the tracking shot.      For the swimming shot, I had to film lying prone on the edge of the pool. It was challenging to get the actor aligned with the camera and keep the phone from getting wet. I ...

Filming Blog - Music Video

On the day of filming, we all met at around 10am at my apartment building. Ultimately, our filming date was pushed back 4 days, due to our differing schedules. We then proceeded to the clubhouse, where there was a gym and a pool. I brought water and some food for everyone. I was the cameraman for this project. Contrary to our first project, I did not use the tripod at all, as the image stabilization in the BlackMagic camera app proved sufficient. I also noticed through my research that many music videos typically do not use tripods, as a still image does not look very natural. I had decided to film in 1080p rather than 4k, as I wanted to limit the file sizes to a manageable level. In the commercial project, I had filmed in 4k, yet YouTube automatically capped it at 1080p, which is why I didn’t go through the hassle of 4k footage this time around.     For many of the shots I experimented with different factors such as the angles, lenses, exposure, and moveme...
