Filming Blog - Music Video
On the day of filming, we all met at around 10am at my apartment building. Ultimately, our filming date was pushed back 4 days, due to our differing schedules. We then proceeded to the clubhouse, where there was a gym and a pool. I brought water and some food for everyone. I was the cameraman for this project. Contrary to our first project, I did not use the tripod at all, as the image stabilization in the BlackMagic camera app proved sufficient. I also noticed through my research that many music videos typically do not use tripods, as a still image does not look very natural. I had decided to film in 1080p rather than 4k, as I wanted to limit the file sizes to a manageable level. In the commercial project, I had filmed in 4k, yet YouTube automatically capped it at 1080p, which is why I didn’t go through the hassle of 4k footage this time around.
For many of the shots I experimented with different factors such as the angles, lenses, exposure, and movements. For instance, in the third shot I used the wide 13mm lens, while for the rest I used the standard 26mm lens. I took multiple takes of each shot so I can choose the best one in editing. We were fortunate enough to not have many people in the area to ruin the shots. The largest interference was other people in the pool we were planning to film, so we had to wait about 30 minutes for them to leave. I tried to use the third lines as much as possible when filming. I filmed in 30fps rather than 24fps so that I have the possibility to make the footage slow motion in post-production. The timeline would still be in 24fps, however. I was not able to frame the treadmill shot as I first anticipated, due to the limited space around the treadmill. I therefore could only capture the lower half of the actor, contrary to the full shot we originally planned. I tried my best to use motion to make the shots more interesting.
