Filming Blog: Finishing up

I filmed many of the shots, however the majority were filmed by Nirmala. The shots I filmed were the kitchen scene, and some of the outside shots. I provided input throughout the filming process and helped by holding the adjustable lamps I had brought. Whenever Nirmala was filming, I was always looking at the iPad to provide feedback as well as remotely adjusting exposure, etc. Using the iPad for this purpose proved quite practical, especially when the camera was placed in an awkward position (as shown in image). This significantly streamlined the filming process. We never had to use the tripod I had brought, since the shots were stable enough using the camera app’s stabilization feature. Also, the fact that the tripod was broken made it quite difficult to work with, so we decided to simply not use it. I made sure to plug in my phone into my power bank any time we took a quick break, just to make sure the battery wouldn’t run out. I suggested to my group that we should try to experiment as much as possible with factors such as angles, movements, and lighting. This way we would have the most flexibility during the editing process. This also meant that by the end of the day, my phone was packed with many gigabytes of footage. I also suggested ways we could save time when filming the shots, for instance by filming all the dialogue for each of the characters in one take and shot-reverse shot in editing. Before we left, we decided to review each of the shots we had filmed. I did this by connecting my phone to Nirmala’s television, as having everyone looking at a tiny phone screen is far from practical. We then went through each of the shots to verify that at least one take was usable and also verified that we had met the requirements we were provided. We found that 2 of the shots we had filmed had too low of an exposure to be usable. We therefore had to refilm those shots, taking care to set the exposure properly this time around. We also had to refilm some of the dialogue, as one of the actors deviated very slightly from the script. After a final review of the footage, and after over 3 hours of filming, we decided that we have finished.
